Kolomna is one of the most picturesque and ancient towns of Moscow region. It’s on a place of confluence of Moscow and Oka Rivers, 100 km South-East of the capital. Kolomenka River flows also through the town.
1177 is considered to be the year of foundation Kolomna. Just then Kolomna was mentioned for the first time in the Laurentian Chronicle. There are some versions concerning an origin of a name of the town: from Kolomenka River, from the word “kamenolomnya”, what means stone quarry (near the town stone had been excavated), from the Ryazan word kolomenye (i.e. border), etc.

Kolomna Kremlin is recommended to visit first off for town visitors. This is well-known monument of Old Russian architecture. Kremlin designed by Italian architects was being constructed from 1525 till 1531. There had been initially seventeen towers in Kremlin, but today seven have remained.
Cathedral Square, the oldest and most beautiful square of Kolomna, is located in the center of the Kremlin. The square arose in the 14th century. At the end of the 18th century, thanks to the master town plan, the Cathedral Square looked as we are able to admire it now. Uspensky cathedral erected in 1682 is the oldest building located on the Cathedral square. It had been built in the place of its predecessor being sorted because of decay (its white stone was used during construction of the walls of new temple).
